14/07/2019

Our Co-Founder Caroline Legler took part in a panel discussion with Alexander Gerst (ESA astronaut and commander of the ISS), Matthias Hartmann, Lutz Bertling, Andreas Hammer and Oliver Juckenhoefel on the impact of intelligent software in space and beyond. Thanks to the organizers of the INNOspace Masters for this great event and the interesting discussions. We are looking forward to next year!

On 3 July 2019, the annual INNOspace Masters conference took place for the fourth time at Humboldt Carré in Berlin. Under the theme “Space Moves!”, the German Aerospace Center (DLR) once again searched for new ideas and concepts designed to address the aerospace industry’s current problems and offer innovative potential solutions.

Four competition categories from different development and innovation phases in the value creation chain were available for the participants to choose from. A total of 253 participants from companies, start-ups, universities and research institutions in 17 European countries submitted their project outlines and 12 were selected for the final round of the innovation competition.

In addition to the idea pitches by the finalists, two panel discussions brought together high-ranking experts from industry and science to discuss future challenges and opportunities in the space sector, particularly with regard to artificial intelligence. The German astronaut and temporary Commander of the International Space Station, Dr Alexander Gerst, and Matthias Hartmann, CEO of IBM Germany, supplemented the conference with speeches.

Key take-aways:

  • The space environment experiences a vibrant and innovative push. New industries and players find access to this so far closed market.
  • Though to support and grow in particular small innovative ideas the traditional challenges, ranging from CAPEX costs and undeveloped regulatory frameworks to technological failures and distribution networks, need to be actively addressed by industry and politics.

Thank you for this geat event with impressive business ideas and lively discussions. We are looking forward to next year!
